A Parent's Guide To Becoming Home School Teachers

Home School Teachers

Home schooling is becoming a more popular decision among parents today. Almost every state has guidelines, regulations as well as support networks set up. The reasons behind the increasing popularity are as varied as the families themselves. Many are drawn to the control over their children's curriculum, while others are interested in adding religious values to the education process. Still other parents are attempting to customize a lesson plan to better suit the needs of their particular child or are disillusioned by the failings of the public school system. Often it is a combination or all of these reasons that are behind the decision to home school.

Becoming A Home School Teacher

Home School Teachers

Home school teachers - aka parents - rarely entering into home schooling without a significant amount of thought. First it requires one parent to stay home full-time and devote the day to teaching the child or children. Creating and following a curriculum, purchasing lessons plans, and arranging field trips can take up a lot of time and a considerable amount of money. That said many parents still feel home schooling to be the best option for their family. The loss of confidence in the public school system may well be the largest factor behind the rising number of home schooling families. Bullying, peer pressure and weak standards of teachings has parents concerned that a public school education may do almost as much harm as good. It isn't hard to understand why many home school teachers feel the advantages of learning at home outweigh the perceived disadvantages of home schooling.

The Truth Of Home Schooling

Critics of home schooling often complain that students taught in the home are socially isolated and never learn how to interact in the real world. The truth, however, is that teachers of home school put much effort into guaranteeing the students connection with society. Home-schooled children are more likely to take part in group activities, team sports and community events. They also tend to interact with a wider range of ages through field trips and volunteer activities. Rather than getting the often-confusing messages of teachers and peers, parents provide a uniform way of treating and respecting others.

Another highly criticized fact of home schooling is the lack of educational qualifications of the home school teachers. While it is true that most home school teachers do not have degrees in education, as parents they are diligent in finding and utilizing the best resources to provide their children with an excellent education. It is thought that the highly personalized attention that home schooled children receive make up for any lack of "educational" knowledge on the part of the home school teacher. Since home-schooled children often score higher than public school students on standardized tests, the quality of their education should not be in question.
